PIANO LESSONS QUICK TIP

How often should my child be practicing?

As parents paying for a valuable education for their child who might just take it for granted, you might find yourself asking, “Is my child practicing enough?”

To be clear, the amount of practice one should be doing per week varies from student to student, and the range and quantity of repertoire being learnt.

For a beginner student, it is incredibly important to encourage your child to practice for at least 45-60minutes a week. This amount of time should be broken up into only 10 or 15 minutes a day over a week (e.g. 3 x 15 minute practice sessions a week).

For intermediate students learning two or more pieces at a time, 20 minute practice sessions over 3 or 4 days a week is enough to motivate them to continue playing, without draining their passion out from over-practicing.

For more advanced students and students preparing for exams, a personalised practice schedule should be written with guidance from your piano teacher. Just a small chat and a couple of minutes is all it takes for a tailored practice plan for your child to ensure they are practicing enough piano.
